Empyrean, the next-level co-op update for the ever-popular shooter Warframe, has arrived on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. This new content is based around co-op, bringing the Railjack battleship to the front lines of space combat. Comprising of crews of up to four players, the battleship will require communication and co-operation in order to keep the weapons online and to repair damage in real time, even repel boarding parties. Not unlike a spacefaring version of Sea of Thieves.

Empyrean, you might recall, was initially unveiled at last year's TennoCon, under the name Project Railjack. The accompanying trailer, which showed teams of players being whisked into the darkness of space in their upgradable battleships to challenge huge enemy vessels, still does a wonderful job of conveying the thrill of combat among the stars.

Railjack battling is intended to be a co-operative experience (better balancing for solo play is coming later), with teams of four able to serve different roles during encounter - namely tactical, piloting, gunnery, and engineering. Before all that, however, players must assemble their Railjacks by completing quests and gathering resources - something that's been possible since the release of Warframe's Rising Tide update - and then it's time to fly.

Space combat is just the start of a number of promises and answers Digital Extremes intends to deliver on in a new generation of Warframe. The Railjack offers an incredible new way to play the game. On the ship, everyone plays a part, from pilot to gunner to engineer, to ensure survival among the stars. You can customize a good portion of your own Railjack to suit your own needs. The ship features multiple hardpoints for different weapons, as well as customizable active and passive abilities to be earned and equipped as you will. You’ll discover more pieces for your ship via salvage quests across the Origin System.

When not careening through space in a frenzy of combat, player can focus their efforts on upgrading their ship, whether it be through simple aesthetic tweaks - such as customisable names and colours - to functional improvements for weapons, armour, or power.
