Why aren’t there more games like Zombie Army 4? Seriously, there aren’t enough games that are simple, balls-out, video game fun. Zombie Army 4 is such a video game and it’s all the better for it. It combines both of the medium’s classic enemies — Zombies and Nazis — ultra-violence and gore, combos, scores and collectibles. It’s pretty much the ultimate “video game.”

While the narrative has enjoyable grindhouse themes, the gameplay matches quite nicely in visceral, action-packed blood baths. One to four players will be responsible for popping zombie’s heads and exploiting the weak points of tougher undead variants. In due course, you can expect zombies with mini-guns, flamethrowers, necromancy powers, suiciders, and you know how it goes with these types of experiences. There is a decent variety of enemy types and a pleasurable balance to when they appear. I always felt powerful enough to be in control, but aware that not being smart about my actions would lead to quick downfalls. There are also enjoyable set-pieces and moments that will get the blood pumping. Our ever stoic leader, Chris, had to stop playing because of a mission’s end being too tense for his weary, old body. There is no (great) escape from the fact that Zombie Army 4 boils down to one simple action: gunning down as many zombies as possible. But this is a wonderfully absurd game, filled with schlock and gore, where Nazi suicide cults and eerie lab experiments are set to an 80s B-movie backdrop of John Carpenter synthwave and pulp comic hyperbole. Even the loading screens glimpse at upcoming levels with the game’s own take on some classic horror movie posters. There’s a huge grindhouse vibe throughout that makes for some very retro cinematic moments, including more than one encounter with zombie sharks.

On top of that, there’s clearly some Doom inspiration here that helps keep the action moving, with certain zombies offering up ammo, grenades, or health packs if you stomp them after they’ve been defeated. This led to some great moments where I recovered from being cornered by taking out a huge wave, healed myself with up-close fatalities, and then stomped enemies on the ground to recover ammo before rushing toward the next objective. Where it had seemed like I was done for just moments earlier, I found myself maxed out and ready for whatever came next without so much as an ammo cache pitstop.

Everything about Zombie Army 4 has been designed to get you to play and keep you playing. You earn XP which levels you up, which in turn unlocks new perks or item mods, which lets you play in a new way. Different weapons change how you play and upgrading them does the same again. Zombie Army 4 is purely “video game” and it’s also so gamified and so full of meta-game content that it’s hard to see ever being “finished.”

Zombie Army 4: Dead War feels largely familiar amid the horde of Left 4 Dead-style co-op shooters, but it isn’t without its clever mechanical touches and spins on the oldest of video game cliches: killing Nazi zombies. Between its varied and campy story campaign and an amusing horde mode, there are plenty of opportunities for harrowing teamwork and gory, disgusting X-ray kills. The weapon progression system doesn’t give a lot of reasons to branch out, though, so the pull of its replayability isn’t as strong as it could be.
